Research Priorities

Low-carbon Energy System

There are two major research topics regarding the low-carbon energy system direction, including the optimal utilization of carbon resources, and the advanced light-energy conversion technology.

Low-carbon energy system supports three major industrial clusters in Fujian province, namely, petrochemical integration, new chemical materials, and electric power industry, and will also support two 100-billion-yuan industrial chain groups machinery equipment and new materials that Xiamen City has focused on building. By 2020, the total output value of low-carbon industries in China will exceed 10 trillion yuan, of which the output value of wind power, solar energy, biomass energy and other industries will exceed 1.5 trillion yuan. At present, wind energy, water energy, gas energy and other clean sources account for more than 55% of the electricity generation in Fujian province. It is expected that by 2040, photovoltaic power will account for 20% of the world's total electricity generation, and solar energy will become one of the main renewable energy sources.

The laboratory will rely on liquid fuel synthesized from coal and biomass, energy chemicals manufactured by syngas with high selectivity, solar fuel, perovskite solar cells and other cutting-edge technologies to promote the development of low-carbon, clean, efficient and diversified energy sources, fill the gap in the industrial layout of high-end chemicals and high-performance fiber materials in Fujian province, and accelerate the process of independence and localization of key materials. In addition, it takes the development of technologies for efficient light-electricity/chemical energy conversion as an important direction of renewable energy field in Fujian province.

Efficient Energy Storage

There are three major research topics regarding the efficient energy storage direction, including the electrochemical energy storage, the hydrogen energy system and technology, and the carbon dioxide fixation.

Efficient energy storage technology is like the backbone which provides support for the major four trillion-yuan-scale industrial clusters in Fujian province, including the automobile industry, the petrochemical industry, the electric vehicle battery and rare earth/graphene-relevant new material industry, and the electric power industry. Efficient energy storage technology also serves as a major application terminal for the thriving trillion-yuan-scale new material industry in Xiamen city. It has been reported that China's cumulative installation for electrochemical energy storage is currently ranking the third in the global market. By 2020, it is expected that the overall lithium-battery-relevant new energy industry in our province will exceed a trillion yuan in scale, of which the battery industry alone will reach 70 billion yuan. Meanwhile, it is also expected that hydrogen energy will account for 18% of China's energy in next 30 years and the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle industry in China will exceed a milestone of trillion-yuan production by 2030.

Aiming at developing highly efficient energy storage technologies, the laboratory is committed to R&D in the following aspects. Specifically, for electrochemical-energy-relevant storage systems, we will provide high-energy-efficiency solutions to the stability and synergy issues harassing the integration of large-scale renewable energy into the power grid, which could serve the development of new energy vehicles, clean energy industries and smart city construction in our province. For hydrogen-energy-relevant technologies, we will focus on the development of low-carbon hydrogen production, hydrogen storage and hydrogen supply technology to solve those bottleneck issues that hinders the hydrogen utilization technology; in addition, the construction of a complete "production-storage-utilization" hydrogen energy system will also be conducted, which will make full use of various energies available in our province (e.g., marine wind energy, solar energy, sea water and fresh water) and will contribute to transformation of Xiamen into a hydrogen energy demonstration city. Last but not least, for carbon dioxide fixation technology, technologies relevant to conversion and storage of chemical energy from electric energy will be developed, which can solve the intermittent and networking difficulties impeding the development of various clean energy technologies (e.g., photovoltaic power, wind power and hydropower) and represents a promising energy storage technology highly compatible with the large-scale clean energy industry.

Future Display Technology

There are three major research topics regarding the future display technology direction, including the Micro-LED technology, the laser display technology, and the flexible display technology.

The future display technology industry chain involves semiconductor, LED technology, flat panel display technology and other industries, which will support Fujian province’s four major industrial clusters of integrated circuits, photoelectronics, high-end equipments, computer and network communications, and electrical appliances, while supporting the 100-billion industrial chain groups of flat panel display, computer and communication equipment, new materials, semiconductors, integrated circuits and others in Xiamen City. With the strong support of Xiamen City, the laboratory sets up the "Xiamen Future Display Technology Research Institute", which will accelerate the new display industry chain enterprises to gather in Xiamen, and make Xiamen to be the world's new source of display technology and a leading place for industrial gathering.

The laboratory will set up seven research and development units, including LED epitaxial chip, Micro-LED device process, massive transfer technology, quantum dot technology, back plate drive technology, detection and repair technology, and Micro-LED special applications; and also give a forward-looking in directions of new flexible display technology, such as organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display technology, organic laser full-color display (OLD), etc.. We aim to form a series of core patent clusters for key technologies, to ensure that China is in the core position in the next generation of display technology.

Graphene And Other Advanced Materials

There are four major research topics regarding the graphene and other advanced materials direction, including the graphene and other two-dimensional materials, the battery materials, the optoelectronic functional materials, and the advanced energy-saving materials.

The graphene and other advanced materials direction will aid the four key industrial clusters in Fujian province including advanced materials of power batteries and rare earth & graphene, textile fiber, integrated circuits and optoelectronics and automobile, provide great support for Xiamen’s rising 100-billion industrial chain groups in the fields of new materials, semiconductors and integrated circuits, computers and communications equipment etc.. The Action Plan for Innovation in the Energy Technology Revolution listed graphene as key material for energy technology development. The "Future Industry Cultivation Project" launched by Xiamen City in 2019 officially listed semiconductor materials as ten future industries with explosive growth potential.

Facing the excessive demand for efficient and clean energy of future China, the direction will be application-oriented, dedicated to the national strategy of emerging industries and related areas, concurrently work on with the ideas of new materials - new devices - new applications, perform research in four secondary subject areas: graphene and other two-dimensional materials, battery materials, photoelectronic functional materials and advanced energy-saving materials. The direction will excavate application breakthrough of graphene and other two-dimensional materials in fields of new energy, energy conservation, catalysis, film technology and microelectronics etc., pursue research on the design and synthesize a variety of functional materials to engage in exploration of new energy chemical storage and conversion technology systems which would provide solid material foundation for the development of energy storage technology. Additionally, the direction will focuses on the scientific and engineering problems of solid surface, solid/gas, solid/liquid interface in energy material to conduct new progress the on material design, preparation and synthesis technologies.

Energy Equipment & Network

There are three major research topics regarding the energy equipment & network direction, including the instrument for materials characterization, the equipment for precision manufacturing, and the intelligent & efficient energy network.

The research of energy equipment & network is mainly focused on the development of advanced instrument & equipment for future energy RD&Ds, which is to support the two major industrial clusters, i.e., the biomedicine and high-end equipment, in Fujian province. The research is related to the 100 billion industrial chain groups in machinery and equipment, biomedicine and health, new materials and others. The industry-oriented research and development of this area cover three pillar industries in Fujian province, namely, electronics, chemical industry and equipment, which are directly to serve Xiamen's photoelectronics industry, scientific instrument industry and new materials industry clusters, and can further support new strategic industries such as biomedicine and new materials.

The innovation is aimed at developing a number of key technical equipments and complete sets of equipments which are in urgent needs of and can be used for intelligent manufacturing, improving the support capacity for intelligent manufacturing and the city's industrial level. The development of materials characterization instrument is to serve the cutting-edge research in energy and display materials, to support the main research direction of energy conversion, via developing the scientific instrument methods of material characterization. The development of precision manufacturing equipment is mainly for the innovations in micro-processing and precision equipment manufacturing technology, with special focus on the development of precision manufacturing technology for semiconductor and photoelectric display industry. The research of intelligent monitoring and control aims to develop intelligent monitoring and control technologies for energy conversion processes, to help large industrial enterprises to achieve energy conservation and environmental protection.

Energy-policy Think-tank

There are three major research topics regarding the energy-policy think-tank direction, including the energy economic assessment, the energy policy design, and the energy strategic planning.

The research of energy equipment & network is mainly focused on the development of advanced instrument & equipment for future energy RD&Ds, which is to support the two major industrial clusters, i.e., the biomedicine and high-end equipment, in Fujian province. The research is related to the 100 billion industrial chain groups in machinery and equipment, biomedicine and health, new materials and others. The industry-oriented research and development of this area cover three pillar industries in Fujian province, namely, electronics, chemical industry and equipment, which are directly to serve Xiamen's photoelectronics industry, scientific instrument industry and new materials industry clusters, and can further support new strategic industries such as biomedicine and new materials.

Industrial Development System

There are three major research topics regarding the industrial development system direction, including the method of achievement commercialization, the process of enterprises incubation, and the expansion of international market.

The modern industrial system uses real economy as the main body, and powered by scientific and technological innovation, and supported by modern finance system and human resources. China is competitive in real economy, scientific and technological innovation, modern finance, human resources and so on, but not yet to utilize these elements. The laboratory is committed to coordinate these various elements, to support the commercialization and industrialization of scientific and technological achievements, to encourage talents to devote themselves to innovation and entrepreneurship work, being open-minded to the global industrial division of labor system, and constantly expand the international market. Insist on in-depth cooperation with leading companies in the industry, jointly develop new technologies and next-generation technologies, implement the commercialization of scientific and technological achievements and high-tech enterprises incubation, support the transformation and upgrading of local pillar industries, strive for strategic emerging industries and supporting industries to prioritize the settlement in Xiamen and Fujian, actively expand the domestic and international markets, comprehensively enhance the economic strength of Xiamen and Fujian.
